How many times have you seen someone in DIY D&D blogville saying some cuh-razy thing and thought, "-sigh-I'm really not gonna get into this with you"? If you're like me, about a million.

But then occasionally you do--or I do, anyway. And why? It's on those rare occasions when the person saying the cuh-razy thing appears otherwise sane, reasonable and intelligent. And so the crazy thing spurs your desire to know some stuff you do not. How can this seemingly alright person think this seemingly psychotic thing? Am I missing something?

So then you go there. And maybe you even go all the way there, because you really really want to know.

Which then, of course, is when you risk offending the person, because your persistence is, in effect, clearly saying "I still think you are crazy, explain more or concede." And this makes the person mad.

Which is ironic, because if you just thought they were just like whatever some blogger blogging up some elfs you wouldn't have mixed it up with them in the first place. So you only risk offending the people you actually think are smart and interesting.

Someone will no doubt post a long comment under this concerning the benefits of respect, etiquette, and decorum in these matters, and they may be right. And then someone else will post saying "Hey man, I read your blog 'cause you say what you think" and they may be right.

But the real point is: hey, just know, the Ironic Punishment Rule is in effect for blogscraping.

Gigacrawler: Martial Arts

This is a place where you can write in melee combat techniques for characters in Gigacrawler (the sci fi dungeoncrawl game we're writing) to use. Any move a character knows may be used once per day, unless noted otherwise.

Martial arts should, in most cases, not give constant bonuses to anything--that would go under skills.

A PC may use a maximum of 5 moves in any one day. If a technique requires a specific roll to be successfully initiated and that roll fails, it is wasted for the day (unless otherwise noted).

Keep in mind: When a PC learns a martial arts technique, the technique they learn is generated randomly, so feel free to include weaker or more powerful results. You may use this.

Keep in mind the average PC has 10-11 Physique points (hit points). You might want to reread the combat section in the original post for ideas. It's short and not terribly different, scalewise than The World's Most Familiar RPG System, but there's a kink or two.

One day this will all be collated into a numbered list. Until then, if you are creating a character using these results, you can count the results here and use this to randomize which martial arts moves your PC knows.

If you contributed any of the results to this earlier open call for Kung Fu moves for our Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game and would now like to submit them to Gigacrawler, feel free. However, I would ask that you please re-stat them (if necessary) and cut and paste them into the thread below yourself for the benefit of my sanity.

Keep in mind not all martial arts originate on Earth, so they may have special effects, or require exotic conditions to be effective--these should be conditions a PC could plausibly fulfill with enough effort.

Here are some to start....

1. Golden Monkey Hook Strike: Leap into the air, hook leg around target's neck, land on the ground and attempt to crush trachea. A successful hit automatically causes 4 physique damage (no need to roll vs target physique) + target makes physique roll vs. attacker's agility to avoid 4 choking damage, plus target is on the ground and grappled.

2. Lucky Number Dodge: PC chooses a number between 1 and 10. Each time s/he rolls that number while dodging (i.e. when rolling to defend against an incoming attack), s/he may automatically trip the attacker. (Always "on"--i.e. it can be used more than once per day, but "turning it on" costs a slot for the day.)

3.Thousand Drunken Tongues Technique: After a successful unarmed to-hit roll, the player begins to speak and the GM starts a stopwatch. The player must then continuously describe, in detail, a series of physical movements his or her character is using to attack his or her enemy, without stopping.

(Example: "I leap into the air, twist, land on top of the guy's head, reach down, shove my fingers into his eyesockets, pluck out one eye, throw it into the air, slice it in half with my dagger, catch the pieces in my mouth, spit them into his face, jump off his head, sweep his legs out from under him, catch him by the hair, throw him through the window, jump through after him, punch him in the neck four times before he hits the ground"...etc.)

If the player pauses for more than one second ("one Miss-iss-ipp-i") the recitation must stop and the GM stops the stopwatch. The longer the player speaks, the more dangerous the attack. The attack causes damage equal to one third the number of seconds the description goes on (rounded down).

The described attack does indeed occur--though it can only include actions which the PC (or, at least, a Jet Li-like version of the character) could physically perform--i.e. if the PC can't eat metal then the description cannot include the PC eating the target's sword. If the description suggests some result in addition to direct physical damage from the assault (i.e. if the strike involves the target being disarmed or thrown into a spike-filled pit), the target may be allowed an agility roll vs. the attackers agility or the like.

Although the described attack can include any number of actions involving weapons, they do no additional damage and the initial to-hit roll is made as if it were an unarmed strike. If more than one target is included in the description the PC can decide how exactly to allocate the damage generated.

An attack description can last up to 30 seconds.

4. Claw of Megathrox: Using a clever feint, the PC grabs two of an enemy's limbs, spins, hooks a third limb under his/her leg and twists the third limb back upon itself, rendering it useless. The complexity of the attack requires the target to have at least 3 arms or appendages placed roughly where arms would be. It is useless against two-armed creatures (or creatures with only 2 functioning arms). If the PC's agility is higher than the target's Physique, the twist is automatically successful. If it is equal or less than the target's physique, there is an opposed agility vs. physique roll. A successful attack also does d4 point of physique damage.

5. Reptile Emperor Ninefold Seeking Fist: The PC can attempt to redirect up to 9 attacks by creatures in a 15-foot radius toward any target of his/her choosing. The PC must announce his/her attention to use this technique at the beginning of a round but the GM should proceed as if the creatures under his/her control do not know this is about to happen. The attacks must be ones that could plausibly be redirected by physically manipulating the attacker (for example, a psionic attack would not be redirected). The PC makes an agility roll against the agility of each attacker, a success indicates the attack has been redirected and must be rolled against the new target instead of the intended one. If no attacks are made in that round, oh well, the technique is wasted for the day.

6. Familiar Ancient Ronin Dodge. If a PC is being attacked by two or more foes at once (melee or missile), this allows the PC to cause the enemies to hit each other (if the physical set up makes that plausible). The PC must successfully dodge (win the roll) against the first attack, thereafter the other attacks are presumed to have been dodged as well. The enemies all then skip to hit rolls and go straight to rolling weapon strength vs. physique at each other (though they may add any points of armor to this roll). If the PC's roll is unsuccessful, s/he may take a combat action to make another dodge (as usual) and the technique takes effect. If this is unsuccessful, it's wasted for the day.

The Philosophical Implications of The Weird

A Short History Of The Super-Human In Art and Popular Belief:

Stories and Images Meant to Educate and Entertain People In The Magic Belief System Era: (existing pre-Enlightenment, fading during the Enlightenment, pretty much dead by the 20th century)

Things and effects that are super-human (magic, elves, angels, etc.) are an organic part of the universe--not just in the sense of organically tied to nature but also tied to human ideas of morality, behavior, symbolism, fate etc. Like: A black cat crossing your path is bad luck, eating human flesh will turn you into a werewolf, a vampire can only come into your house if you invite it in, etc. Fantasy as a genre is built on this implied philosophy. In short: superhuman things care about your behavior--especially in its moral or at least symbolic aspect--and react to it.

Stories and Images Meant to Educate and Entertain People In The Technological Belief System Era: (ascending during the enlightenment, in full bloom by the mid-20th century)

Things and effects that are super-human (robots, aliens, cyborgs) are an organic part of the universe, but no more so than we are, and are not tied in any intrinsic way to human morality, behavior, fate, etc. Like: The spacefungus just wants to reproduce, Mars wants our women due to no fault of our own, The Alien is built that way to survive, etc. Most science fiction is built on this implied philosophy. In short: we're products of motiveless, amoral scientific processes and so are the rest of the wonders of the universe.

The Weird represents a transition historically (in the '30s) aesthetically, and philosophically between these two belief systems, in the words of the Man Himself:

The true weird tale has something more than secret murder, bloody bones, or a sheeted form clanking chains according to rule. [i.e. The Magical] A certain atmosphere of breathless and unexplainable dread of outer, unknown forces must be present; and there must be a hint, expressed with a seriousness and portentousness becoming its subject, of that most terrible conception of the human brain--a malign and particular suspension or defeat of those fixed laws of Nature which are our only safeguard against the assaults of chaos and the daemons of unplumbed space.

The Weird:

The creations of The Weird--in it's most typical form--are consistently described as organic yet unnatural. Cthulhu is weird, green slime with eyeballs (a thoroughly 20th century idea) is weird, the Tripheg is weird, things that mix the (magic) symbolic with the (science-fiction) seemingly biologically plausible (an eel with a man's face that is blind and bloated from living beneath the water for years) are weird.

Scientific belief and traditional sci-fi don't accept this category: nothing is "unnatural"--all is explicable, and magic only accepts the unnatural as an expression of something morally repugnant. In fantasy and magic belief systems, stuff Satan made is unnatural, the rest isn't.

The weird fits neither. Whatever's going on is rarely as explicable as Satan.

Therefore the fundamental underlying philosophy of the Weird is a sort of difficult-to-categorize thing. Lovecraft is the premier example. Is Cthulhu:

A) actually bad or
B) just a big alien that doesn't care about us any more than we care about our stomach parasites?

It is purposefully left unclear*: if it is A, then Cthulhu is (thematically if not aesthetically) just a Demon, which is a fantasy idea from the era of magical thinking and we can relax into the moonlight and ravens of that romantic world, and trust that if we are good and righteous or at least obedient to the signs we will get what we deserve. If it's B, then Cthulhu is just a Big Green Monster, and we can run or shoot it with lasers.

But it isn't clear: in a million ways that I will not categorize here, Lovecraft and other avatars of the weird purposefully cloud the issue. When we summon him, are we Wrong to do it, or just Incorrect to think it's a good idea? We cannot rely on our goodness or our lasers to save us, it is an unsettling genre.

The other Weird Tales authors don't necessarily hit the weird nail on the weird head quite as hard as Lovecraft, but they all seem to partake of a certain moral/aesthetic confusion not seen in earlier heroic and horrific tales: does the hero succeed because s/he is good (or at least philosophically "correct"), because s/he is clever, or neither? Does the victim die because s/he is sinful, foolish, or both? Or neither? Is the thing encountered hostile, or just an alien predator?

In a sense, the weird is a spike of uncertainty between two valleys of clarity. When thinking Magically, we know we are in a world of symbols, and that to be human is to somehow be woven into the symbols: the Sky may want something from us, but we want something from it, so that's fair and, perhaps eventually, explicable, when thinking Scientifically, we know we are stupid, but one day we may learn. The Weird is another thing altogether: can we learn about it or not? Will it turn us evil just to learn about it? Or is it simply a phenomenon we can eventually master?

The Call of Cthulhu game is very elegant in mechanically modelling this. You start with no knowledge of the premise of the game--"Mythos: 0%"--but the more knowledge you gain (the more fit you are to play the game) the more crazy you go (the less fit you are to play the game). The instability and the uncertainty grow and grow. You become more skilled and crazier, so those skills seem to be less and less relevant--or just more dangerous since there's always the chance you'll turn them on your friends. Surgery 90% seemed like such a good thing in the beginning. Just like science.

Magic has a dramatic logic (like a fairy tale), science has a procedural one (learn or die), the Weird might not have any. It is significant that Lovecraft stories do not always end with death or always with escape. They are not definitely horror or definitely adventure.

The Weird is a delicate balance, in a story or a game, to maintain. I groan when the laser swords come out at the end of Masks of Nyarlathotep, though I also was obscurely disappointed to hear about the space ships the Old Ones seem to (maybe) have had.

So: the weird is built on an uncertainty about whether our morality, symbols and emotions do have any meaning in this science-run universe or not. Whether any badness is actually bad or just "different". Magic knows the snake is evil, science knows it is just other, The Weird is not sure.

Boring academics will reduce this all down to anxieties about race: are they evil or just different? But I think the confusion goes farther than that, and to far more interesting places.

Now that we've spent quite some time (in art years) in a science fiction era, some authors--mostly ones who are doing that thing certain kinds of leftists do where they ask science if it can truly be its own morality--are swinging back toward The Weird. Because they want to make us unsure and unsettled about whether or not our morals and symbols can be left behind. And also because artists ALWAYS use The Magical because they are all about manipulating symbols--The Alien may be written from a science perspective, but it's big and black and slippery for psychological reasons.

The Surreal, in the classic High Art sense (which happened around the same time as the Weird Tale) is just The Weird with its connections to the Magic past and Scientific future (those two popular ideas fit for mass consumption) cut off. It is all the present. Floating Mars bars and cars with elephant heads. When the Surreal seems to rely too much on the clarity of science or magic, it ceases to feel Surreal.

So the Surreal is purer, but the Weird is more useful for games. You might not be able to understand The Weird, but at least you might be able to transition to something--the symbolic logic of Magic or the procedural logic of Science--by going through it. The second season of Twin Peaks seemed to struggle on this point: Were aliens involved? Was magic involved? Should we try to figure out what's going on before Cooper does? Or was it just Surreal?

Mandy proposes a similar division she'd call Catholic Weird vs. Protestant Weird. Protestant Weird being David Lynch and Edward Scissorhands ("clean") and Catholic Weird being Thomas Pynchon and Cormac McCarthy and Warhammer ("messy").

Some considerations for games:

-For me, psionics in D&D feel wrong unless they involve The Weird. Since the Weird is a transition between the Magical (D&D) and the Sci Fi, I feel like the Weird and the Sci Fi can exist in a world (Gigacrawler, Rifts), and the Weird and the Magical can coexist (Mind Flayers) and all three can be together (Shadowrun, and Warhammer 40k and Warhammer Fantasy sharing the same Chaos army lists--a good and rare example of the artists successfully merging the creative and commercial requirements of the situation), but skipping straight from Magic to Sci Fi (look, now I have swords for hands! It was easy!) without a certain level of Weirdness and Confusion seems like it just ruins the aesthetic effect.

-Psionic powers as an idea are Weird when they move into the zone where they overlap with psychological ideas. Like: the Star Trek guys who can just move things with their minds are not Weird. The ones who create things out of thin air because they have nightmares about them are Weird. This kind of thing uses a pseudoscientific explanation to bridge the gap between an indifferent natural world and a Magic one where the environment cares about what we think or believe.

-The whole "Magic-is-unnatural" trope seems to reek of The Weird. When Mandy and I playtested a Weird Fantasy Roleplaying adventure and found out that Detect Magic and Detect Evil were pretty hard to tell apart in the system, it seemed like a rather keen symbol for the whole moral-confusion issue here.

-"Chaos" is a key word. Is chaos merely unpredictability (the biggest barrier to clarity in science) or is it actual moral badness? The confusion in early D&D (and in Warhammer, and in the clones) about whether or to what degree the alignment "Chaotic" just meant "Evil" is a prime symptom of the doubt at the center of The Weird. As is everything in Michael Moorcock and the other works the Chaos idea came from. I do not mean to resolve the issue, just point to it as an example of how this aesthetically Weird idea of "these parts don't fit together" and the philosophical lack of clarity almost always come packaged together.

-Since the '80s, the Japanese seem to have an easier (and sometimes oddly frictionless) time negotiating back and forth across Lake Weird from Sci Fi to Fantasyland and back again than artists in the west. It may (may) have something to do with the fact that an aesthetic of abstraction and unnaturalness are more deeply expressed in traditional Japanese art and design than in any other culture. The unnatural is totally ok. Or, if not ok, than something you might have to get used to: Akira: you're weird, deal.

*Like we are constantly told the mythos creatures don't care about us and are alien, yet everyone involved with them practices dark arts and becomes totally weak, corrupt and, basically, Pure Evil.

Gigacrawler: Alterations

Here is a place where you can list alterations for starting PCs in Gigacrawler, the game we're making.

Since, unlike spells, devices and martial arts, PCs have the option to choose which (if any) of these alterations their PC has this list must be more balanced than the others. No option should be obviously way better or worse than the others.

If an alteration is a cyborg implant or robot part, it is presumed to have a tech level of 10 or a tech level equal to the PC's own, whichever is higher. The PC is presumed to be able to operate any modifications she starts with, however, and the tech level only comes into play in certain situations (someone attempts to modify it, Gigacrawler Alterations (adaptations, mutations, and modifications for nonhumans, mutants, robots, and cyborgs)someone throws a Coldbringer grenade, etc.). It is possible for characters to acquire implants with tech levels higher or lower than their own later in the game, and, even if they are higher, the PC will be able to use them.

A GM may opt to allow a PC to have extra alterations if the character chooses negative alterations that have a genuine practical effect (only one arm, blind, etc.). A wildly generous GM may allow a PC to have any other extra (a skill, or a randomly determined spell, martial art, or piece of equipment) in exchange for such a handicap. At some point we may make a separate page for such "negative alterations".

If you are creating a character with alterations, you can count the results here and use this to randomize which alterations your PC has or just pick ones you like.

1. Claws: Add 3 to the strength of unarmed attacks

2. Spikes or spurs on body: Successful unarmed strikes from a foe cause a weapon strength 4 attack back at that foe.

3. Can survive without food indefinitely. (Player must name alternate fuel source.)

4. Insect eyes/scanners: +1 to initiative for whole group. (Doesn't stack with other members of group.)

5. Eats metal. (No faster than a human eats meat.)

6. Can survive without water indefinitely. (Player must name alternate fuel source.)

7. Needs half as much food and water as a human.

8. Tough species/model: Add 2 to physique, subtract 1 from agility.

9. Nimble species/model: Add 2 to agility, subtract 1 from physique.

10. Thick hide: skin has 3 points of armor built in.

11. Antichaotic species/built-in reality stabilizer: Magic has 50% of failure within 5 feet of creature. PC's magic level must be 4 or less. Lost points may be added to tech level.

12. Detachable/throwable head. Flying bite attacks are possible. Can be thrown current physique +5 feet.

13. Detachable/throwable hand. A line of cartilage, filament or cord may connect the PC to the hand if desired or the hand may be completely "free", but the PC must decide during character generation. can be thrown physique x 2 feet.

14. Eats chaos: If any opposed roll by anyone at the table results in 1 and 10 being rolled simultaneously, the PC gains a re-roll to use whenever s/he likes.

15. Extra limb: PC is allowed one extra non-attack, non-spellcasting action per round if it can be
plausibly performed by the limb.

16. Two extra limbs: PC is allowed one extra action (including an attack but not including spellcasting) during combat if it can be plausibly performed with the extra limbs. However the extra limbs make the PC too unwieldy to effectively dodge ordinary combatants so s/he does not add his or her agility when rolling against an opponent's to-hit roll (other modifiers may still be applied, and the defender still gets to roll). The multi-limbed PC may dodge attacks made from more than 40 feet away normally, though the roll is made at -2.

17. Variable weapon mount. A successful tech check against a handheld weapon's tech level and a successful intelligence roll against it allows any hand-held weapon to be modified to fit this mount. The attached weapon can be used at a +3 to hit. Only available as a robot modification or cybernetic.

18. Chaintread. The PC has a narrow chainsaw-like blade installed in his/her lower arm, leaving an row of exposed teeth running from wrist to elbow on the outer forearm. It can be used to make a melee attack with weapon strength = current physique + 5 but the attack is awkward (- 3 to hit). The more common use is as a parrying device--if the PC rolls a 7 or above (and succeeds) when avoiding a melee attack, this is counted as a parry with the chaintread and whatever the attacker was trying to hit the PC with takes 8 points of damage (no roll--the attacker is effectively shoving his/her weapon or fist into a chainsaw.) Only available as a robot mod or cybernetic.

19. Unusual internal anatomy. Internal organs are wherever the player says they are. The PC should secretly write down where his her various organs are--especially his/her brain, and heart/power source are (though announce s/he has this alteration). Whenever the DM announces (or it is otherwise determined) that a particular body part is seriously wounded, the PC must reveal the locations.

20. Hovering. The PC hovers instead of walking. Speed is as walking.

Shenanigans

If an argument concerning the rules is going on (2 players, a player arguing in the face of a GM ruling, etc.) and it begins to bore any person at the table or watching the game, that party may call Shenanigans.

When Shenanigans is called, a stopwatch or timer is started. Parties involved in the dispute have 3 minutes to state their case and come to a mutual agreement. After that, the decision is made randomly. The decision of the dice must be obeyed, even if someone believes it directly contradicts the official rules.

If a party is painfully aggrieved by a decision made during the game, s/he will receive a "playing in protest" coupon for a metagame reward after the game at the expense of the other players--usually in the form of beer, ice cream or shots of Jager in whatever quantities will get him/her to shut up and roll. However, thereafter the other players are entitled to mock the player during the next session (only), though the rate must be no higher than a single one-liner per player.
